Winterbourne Botanic Garden
The garden extends across a six-acre site and is home to specimen trees, shrubs and perennial plants, both outside and under glass. The collection has an outstanding and wide variety of species but specialist areas include Alpine plants, endemic plants from Madeira, Mediterranean plants and plants from the Hubei region of China. We also hold two important National Collections, the first of roses, representing their development through history, and the second anthemis, a daisy-like flower from the Mediterranean area.
Winterbourne was built in 1903 as a private residence and as such we are lucky to retain many of the original Arts & Crafts features in the garden. This means that, as well as botanical collections, we also have historically themed areas such as the Red and Yellow Border, a 60-metre long herbaceous border where the colours blend from pale yellows through oranges to reds and back to yellows.
