Fianna Fáil Archives
The Fianna Fáil Party has been the largest and most resilient political oganisation in Ireland since independence. Founded in 1926, it was elected to government in 1932 and ruled for sixteen years. For more than forty of the years since the 1950s it has been in single party or coalition governments.
The party’s archives complement significantly the private papers of many Fianna Fáil government ministers held by UCD Archives and document the organisation and development of the party since its foundation.
The collection includes a large series of election posters, often innovative and visually complex. This poster for the 1944 general election reinforced Ireland’s isolationist wartime position and conveyed the characteristically gloomy prognosis that drove government policy at the period.
