Medical History Museum

The Medical History Museum at the University of Melbourne was formally established in 1967 by Professor Kenneth Russell, and was opened with generous funding from the Wellcome Institute (now Trust), London, in support of study and research in medical history. It is the oldest and finest collection associated with a medical school in Australia, and is in keeping with the long tradition of leading medical schools across the world in developing their historical resources as a study collection. Initially setting out to record the history of the Melbourne Medical School, its teachers, students and curriculum from its commencement in the 1850s, the scope of the museum has since broadened and today covers the history of medical practice in Victoria, from the earliest colonial days. Alongside the Henry Forman Atkinson Dental Museum http://museum.dent.unimelb.edu.au/dental/home.html and the Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology http://www.anatomy.unimelb.edu.au/museum/index.html the Medical History Museum is one of three Museums within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne.

An online catalogue provides details of all the collection, and can be located at www.chs.unimelb.edu.au/ and follow links to the Museum.

The Medical History Museum is open to the public Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm. Enquiries can be forwarded to the curator at brothers@unimelb.edu.au, or on
